National WCR Convention Chefs Visit Wood Stone
On Saturday November 5th, Wood Stone hosted a group of women chefs for a day. The chefs were entertained at the Taylor Shell Fish Farm and Wood Stone factory as one of the optional culinary tours offered by the National Women Chefs & Restaurateurs (WCR) Convention held this year in Seattle.
The day was full of food, socializing and fun. The chefs began the day at the Taylor Shellfish farm later making their way to the Wood Stone factory in Bellingham, WA.
Wood Stone's test kitchen was transformed into a culinary theater where guests could experience the beauty of stone hearth cooking. Wood Stone chefs prepared a five course meal for the guests. Some of the menu items included; braised pork shoulder, paella and a variety of salmon entrees. Donated wine from the Andrew Will Winery was the perfect compliment to the wonderful meal.
Lummi Island Wild owner, Riley Starks, was present to talk about the importance of about wild salmon fishing, the Puget Sound and Fraser River ecosystem. The salmon prepared for the event was provided by Lummi Island Wild Salmon.
The women were also able to get their hands dirty (well, it was actually chocolate) by roasting marshmallows for S'mores out of a Wood Stone Tandoor oven.
The chefs were also given a full tour of the factory to see the manufacturing process. The tour covered all bases of the Wood Stone production process and allowed chefs to learn and ask questions about Wood Stone's products.

Wood Stone Corporation was given the opportunity to participate in Fourth Corner Slow Foods 5th Annual Harvest Dinner on September 12, 2004. Wood Stone provided a wood-fired oven to aid in the preparation of menu items for over 300 guests that gathered to celebrate and thank family farmers.
The harvest dinner was an open-air feast on the Village Green in Fairhaven and was a sell out success. Some of the menu items included; artisan bread, pizzette, organic chickens, Puget Sound grilled king salmon and fresh apple and mixed berry cobblers.
Slow food U.S.A. is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to supporting and celebrating the food traditions of North America. They oversee the Slow Food activities in North America, including the support and promotion of the activities of hundreds of local chapters, each called a “convivium”. Bellingham, WA hosts its own The Fourth Corner Slow Food convivium.
“… we would like to thank Wood Stone for helping us make the 5th annual harvest dinner the best ever by providing the “hearth” around which our community gathered. Your generosity was appreciated by more than three hundred members of our community including fifty Whatcom County farmers.”- Fourth Corner Slow Food, Bellingham, WA.
Many people came together for this event and donated items to make it a success. All ticket proceeds went to support Whatcom Farm Friends and Fourth Corner Slow Food. It was a great opportunity for Whatcom County to thank farmers and supporters of slow food who focus on farming, food, and culture. |
